Fisheries Management

From complete ecosystem management to permit compliance, Piedmont Pond Pros, LLC can help you create a vigorous, sustainable fishery. We will work closely with you to design a plan that is customized to your specific goals, budget, and timeframe.

A healthy fish population can provide insect control, recreational fishing opportunities, and overall ecosystem balance in a pond or lake. Whether you’re searching for recreational fishing or visual pleasure, we can help you properly plan your project from beginning to end. We can stock completely empty ponds/lakes or refill old ones with our special electrofishing equipment.

Don’t forget – the fish you stock are a long-term investment! We guarantee healthy fish and can expertly stock:

GAME FISH
(for recreational fishing)
  • Largemouth Bass
  • Channel Catfish
  • Bluegill
FEEDER FISH
(live food for bigger fish)
  • Shellcracker/Sunfish
  • Fathead Minnows
  • Crayfish
ORNAMENTAL FISH
(for aesthetic purposes)
  • Koi
  • Goldfish
BIOLOGICAL CONTROL
(to control vegetation)
  • Grass Carp
  • Largemouth bass are typically the top predatory fish in a lake or pond. They grow fast (up to 1.5 pounds per year) and are excellent to catch on a rod and reel! These fish are critical to many lakes and ponds in order to maintain a proper balance of predator to prey.
  • Channel Catfish are an added bonus! They increase the productivity of your pond, do not compete with other fish, and can be stocked anytime.
  • Bluegill and Fathead Minnows are excellent food sources for largemouth bass. They are a necessity if “catch and release” bass fishing is the priority.
  • Koi and Goldfish are the most popular addition to ponds and water gardens because their bright coloration is easy to spot.
  • In North Carolina, only Sterile Grass Carp are allowed. They are incredibly effective at controlling aquatic vegetation because they can consume up to 3 times their body weight per day. (They may not be effective for controlling pennywort, lily pads, or tough woody vegetation.)

WHY DO YOU NEED A KOI POND IN YOUR BACKYARD?

  • Many people believe they bring good luck and strength.
  • Their natural beauty.
  • Koi ponds can relieve stress.
  • Koi fish are a low-maintenance pet.
  • They can raise your property value.

KOI PONDS are often created and designed to bring a relaxing and peaceful energy to homes.  Koi, or Nishikigoi, are descendants of the common carp. Inspired by Chinese rice farmers keeping carp in their rice paddies, Japanese rice farmers began to do the same practice. However, the Japanese farmers noticed a color variation in some of the carp. These carp had numerous, bright colors as opposed to the natural brown color of most carp. Through selective breeding, more and more of the “mutant” carp with bright colors and patterns were born. The brightly colored carp are known as koi.

In Koi ponds, you need to clean out the filter once a week to keep it running efficiently. During the springtime, we recommend removing the fish and any plants from the pond, draining the pond completely, and giving the liner and any rockwork a scrub or power wash.

Partial water changes are also essential for Koi ponds. Changing some of the water helps to replenish kH, which buffers the water pH, preventing potentially harmful fluctuations that are dangerous to Koi. The addition of freshwater to your pond also boosts the number of trace minerals like magnesium and calcium, which Koi and goldfish require for good health.
